Understanding the DoD MOU

As you begin exploring your college, career, and post-Service options, you may come across the term “DoD MOU.” So, what is a DoD MOU, and what does it have to do with you and your future? It’s all about making sure that Service members like you get the educational and vocational opportunities you deserve.

DoD MOU: The Basics

The DANTES team is committed to helping you define your future. The Department of Defense (DoD) Voluntary Education Partnership Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is an agreement between DoD and educational institutions, ensuring that Service members receive equitable treatment while pursuing educational goals.

Educational institutions that wish to participate in the DoD Tuition Assistance (TA) Program must sign an MOU specifying its commitments and agreements; otherwise, the institution cannot receive funds from a Service’s TA program. The memorandum, along with a list of educational institutions that have signed it and are committed to supporting students with military backgrounds is available on the DoD MOU website.

What Does It Mean When a School Signs the MOU?

These schools are committed to giving Service members equal treatment, and they provide reputable programs overall. Only institutions accredited by a national or regional accrediting body and recognized by the Department of Education (ED) can sign the MOU, and they also must have an identification number assigned by the Office of Postsecondary Education within the ED. This is necessary for eligible institutions to participate in federal student financial aid programs and receive Title IV funding.

What Does This Mean for You?

You can be assured the institution is in compliance with state requirements and laws; they are state-approved for the use of Veterans’ education benefits; they are certified to participate in federal student aid program through the Department of Education; and they are accredited by a national or regional accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education and conduct programs that support degree programs from that institution.
