Academic Skills Training

Online Training to Improve Your College Entrance and Promotion Opportunities

Program Overview

The Academic Skills Training (AST) program assesses your academic strengths and weaknesses to help improvement in basic math, English and science skills for college-level course placement, qualification for reclassification or advance training, and military advancement. The self-paced online course can be used by service members as a standalone course, or as a supplement to other educational resources. The individual learning paths improve your knowledge of the concepts and the skills you need to excel in each area; lessons are supported by interactive drills and practice sets, followed by quizzes to help you gauge your progress. Plus, the program has some great features like:

  • Academic Help Desk
  • Online Video Tutoring
  • Mobile App for use anytime and anywhere

NOTE: The College Placement Skills Training (CPST) course is being phased out; however, if a member has already started the course, he/she will be able to finish the course.

Student Benefits

Academic Skills Training helps you:

  • Assess Your Strengths/Weaknesses: Short knowledge assessments help you learn about your strengths and weaknesses. The training modules are tailored to help build your skills in any areas that need to be improved.
  • Earn Completion Certificates: Students who complete the OASC modules will receive a certificate that states they completed the English & Math Course or English, Math, & Science. This certificate is downloadable and can be given to the student’s command to show proof of completion. Depending on your Service, counselors will recommend you be allowed to re-take the Armed Forces Classification Test (AFCT) or be recommended to receive tuition assistance (TA).
  • Get Help When Needed: Use the Academic Help Desk and Online Tutoring when you have questions or difficulty with your course. Real time support is provided around the clock, seven days a week.
  • Improve Your Scores: OASC can help you improve your Armed Forces Classification Test (AFCT) or college-entry exam scores.
  • Learn Anytime and Anywhere: Whether traveling, stationed in a remote location with limited or no internet access, or stateside in your own home, the OASC Academic Skills Training mobile application is available. Your progress will automatically upload when you have an internet connection and you can continue the course on your phone, tablet or computer.
  • Learn Your Way: OASC provides interactive lessons, games, and drills to support your personal learning style. The self-paced programs also allow you to work at your own speed.
  • Network with Other Learners: A Peer-to-Peer Discussion Area is available, so learners can ask for help, advice, and best practices from peers. If learners get stuck on a problem or need some encouragement, they are encouraged to visit the discussion area for help.
  • Succeed! Practice tests, quizzes, and an end-of-course test provide feedback to ensure that you master the material for training success.
