Secrets to Academic Success

Preparing now will help you achieve greater success in college and in your future.

As our teachers always used to say at the beginning of the school year, preparation is 90% of success, and it’s no different when you begin your college career. Take steps now to understand what motivates you; preparing now will help you achieve greater success in college and in your future.

Know Yourself

One of the toughest aspects of earning a college degree is deciding where to start. If you’re not sure about your strengths and interests, it will be more difficult for you to push through the ups and downs of the college experience. The Kuder Journey tool will help you determine what you might enjoy most as a career, what will fit with your strengths and personality, and where you may find the most long-term growth potential.

Many Veterans enjoy careers in teaching or law enforcement, but because military service requires people with broadly diverse skill sets, you may also find your niche in fields such as business, health care, the arts, or agriculture. You’ll be happier – and more successful – if you choose a career path that plays to your strengths and interests. Remember to balance practical needs with your dreams and goals for the future.

Plan Ahead and Save

Once you have an idea about the area you want to pursue, check to see what credits you may have already earned. You can save time and money by getting credit for knowledge and experience you already have. There’s nothing like finding out you’ve already accomplished more than you thought to boost your self-confidence.

Before you enroll in classes, you can use the Joint Services Transcript (JST) to discuss your military coursework and other credits with an academic advisor. You can also use TA DECIDE to research different schools and make the most of your military tuition benefits.

Additionally, CLEP and DSST exams allow you to earn credits for college courses. With more than 30 subject areas, you could have several credits under your belt and give yourself momentum before you even start college.

Develop Strong Study Skills

In college, studying is a muscle you develop over time. By learning to prepare, you will be less stressed on exam day, and you’ll know how to identify gaps and areas of weakness. Check out Peterson’s DoD MWR Libraries for an inventory of study information with a variety of practice exams, e-books and full-length online courses to prepare for exams including CLEP and DSST.

Take Advantage of Tutoring

Don’t wait until the night before a big exam—the best time to begin tutoring is now. Through a partnership with Tutor.com and the DoD, service members and qualifying military family members, including K-12 dependents of active duty, can connect 24/7 with live tutors for free tutoring in a range of subject areas.
