Plan Your Career with Kuder Journey

How do DANTES programs help me get my degree?

How do DANTES programs help me get my degree? Who can help me get started?

Just the thought of pursuing a post-secondary education brings up several questions for many military members. The questions don’t stop either. Every military student pursuing a college degree has questions from time to time and throughout their education journey. As a military member, you have to juggle daily duties, deployments, family matters, and your education. But thankfully, because of your military service, there are no-cost education benefits, like Kuder Journey, to help you stay focused and reach your goals.

The Defense Department’s (DoD) Voluntary Education (VolEd) community has the responsibility of ensuring your education questions are answered to help you successfully reach your education goals and complete your college degree or certification. DANTES offers many no-cost programs, such as Kuder Journey, to help set you on the right path for success.

You have questions. We have answers.

This article, the second in a series on FAQs or frequently asked questions, strives to help you succeed in your pursuit of professional development and education goals. Our first article shared questions on preparing for online learning with DLRSA, the Distance Learning Readiness Self-Assessment. This article will answer the top 5 questions we receive on Kuder Journey, your free college and career planning tool and so much more.

Q. What is Kuder Journey?

A. Kuder Journey is a one-of-a-kind solution to help you and other military members with college and career planning. Based on specific individual needs, Kuder provides reliable tools to assess your career interests, suggest education and career options, prepare a transitioning member for a job search, and connect them to job opportunities when needed.

Tailored career guidance within the program is available to all active military members and can be especially helpful to members in transition. Kuder Journey is a military member’s resource during the military-to-civilian transition process. But it is also helpful during your military career to provide insight on the best career path for you based on your skills, likes, and work values.

Q. How does the Kuder Journey program work?

A. Once a military member registers, they will be prompted to take three short assessments to determine their interests, skills confidence, and work values. After each assessment, the student is immediately presented with their results and a short video explaining how to understand the results. From there, students can explore occupations by their assessment results, their military occupational specialty, or by typing in a specific occupation title. At this point, students can share their results by email with a counselor to continue the education and career planning process. Students can also use the program to search for DoD partnership schools, financial aid, and plan for transition with various job search tools and an online portfolio.

Q. How long will it take to complete the assessment?

A. There are the three short assessments inside of the system that take an average total of 20 minutes to complete. You can review the descriptions and then start with the assessment that works best for you. If you cannot complete all three assessments in one sitting, you can save your progress and return to finish it later. The Interest Assessment takes approximately 9 minutes, the Skills Confidence Assessment takes roughly 7 minutes, and the Work Values Assessment takes about 4 minutes to complete.

Q. Can I take Kuder Journey assessments again? I am being asked for an activation code, where do I get the code?

A. Yes, you can retake Kuder Journey assessments. You should have no problem, if you registered within the last few years. However, military members who registered more than two years ago may be asked for an activation code. This does not mean that they cannot retake a re-assessment. The member should call the Kuder Client Engagement line at 877.999.6227 and a specialist will provide the information needed to retake any of the assessments.

Q. What is the e-Portfolio within Kuder Journey?

A. The Kuder e-Portfolio highlights important job skills and qualifications, to include items such as resumes, cover letters and certificates. You can post your e-portfolio online for viewing by potential employers, etc.

There are five easy steps to create an e-Portfolio under the Job Search Tools tab or the My Portfolio tab.

  1. Create a personal home page with a banner message, introduction, photo and contact information.
  2. Add a resume. This is an essential part of an e-Portfolio. You can store one in your personal e-portfolio, upload a new one, or create one within Kuder Journey.
  3. Add other sections such as information about certifications you hold, work samples, or a list of references. For each section added, you will be able to create your own title, write an introductory paragraph, and then upload the appropriate file.
  4. You may want to add a cover letter to your e-Portfolio. Again, you can store it, upload it, or create one within Kuder.
  5. When you publish your e-Portfolio, you will be given a personal web address. You can release that address to anyone you want to view your portfolio.
