DANTES programs can save you time and money, thereby driving your academic and career success. A focused effort on your education can lead to both civilian career and military advancement opportunities. The following DANTES programs are available to you at no cost, funded, or reimbursable – and can shorten your time to degree completion.

Academic Skills Training

Need help in math or writing? No worries. According to the U.S. Department of Education, about a third of American students require remedial education in reading, writing, and math skills. Students need to have the necessary knowledge and skills in math and English to qualify for and succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing postsecondary coursework or job training without the need for remediation. In the military, strong academic skills are also necessary for training and advancement in every occupational field.

The Online Academic Skills Course (OASC) is designed to prepare you for college level coursework, by improving their skills in English, language arts, essay writing, and college level math. This will help to avoid the extra time and tuition costs associated with taking non-credit bearing, developmental courses too. Visit our Academic Skills Training page for more information.

College Comparison Tool

Thinking about going to college? But you just don’t know where to start? That’s okay. Here’s a tool to help. TA DECIDE was created to help you choose the right school for your needs and goals. It’s online and easily accessible, with thousands of colleges to choose from. Each school has been vetted by the Department of Defense (DoD) to ensure quality and value for your time and money. Plus, all schools are eligible for military tuition assistance (TA). When a college has already met quality-driven criteria and is eligible for TA, you can’t help but save time and money. Visit our TA DECIDE page for more information.

College Admission Exams

Ready to start college? Many colleges require students to submit test results as part of the college admission application process. These tests may also be required for entry into an officer accession program or military-sponsored academy. DANTES pays for college admission exams, including the ACT, SAT, GMAT, and GRE. If reimbursed by DANTES, the cost savings ranges from approximately $40 for the ACT to $250 for the GMAT. Visit our Enter College section for more information.

College Credit by Examination

How would you like to get college credit for information you already know or military training you just completed? DANTES Credit-by-Exam program allows you to earn college credit by demonstrating the knowledge and skills you’ve already gained. By taking CLEP and DSST exams, in a variety of subjects, you can receive college credit that can be used towards a college degree without sitting in a classroom for weeks. DANTES funds both exams for you, when taken at National Test Centers (NTCs) located around the world. Save money and cut the time it takes to earn a degree. Visit our CLEP and DSST page for more information.

Military Training and Experience Evaluations

You can also use what you know from your past training and military experiences to get college credit. The Defense Department partners with the American Council on Education (ACE) to translate military learning experiences into comparable civilian postsecondary college credit. The Joint Services Transcript (JST) capitalizes on your knowledge by documenting your occupational experience and training. This information is translated into ACE-recommended college credit. The “credit for prior learning” can be used to reduce the amount of time it takes to complete degree requirements and may serve as a guide for developing resumes or career portfolios. Visit our JST page for more information.
